AI governance that stays in your environment

Governing AI tools means recording sensitive decisions about code, credentials and data. Those records belong inside your own environment, captured with restraint.

Governing AI coding tools means watching what they do: which files they open, which commands they run, what they send and where. Done properly, that produces a detailed record of how your engineering organisation works. That record is valuable, and it is sensitive.

So a question comes before any feature list: where does that record live, and who can see it?

The record is as sensitive as the code

A decision record for an AI action can show a file path, a repository name, a command or an internal hostname. Even without the content itself, that is a map of your systems. Sending it to a shared, multi-tenant service adds a new place where your most sensitive context sits outside your control.

Principles worth insisting on

When you evaluate any approach to AI governance, these are the questions that matter:

  • Where does the control plane run? Ideally single tenant, in your cloud or data centre, so policies and decision records stay inside your environment.
  • What is captured by default? The default should be decision context: what happened, which rule applied and the outcome. Not the full content of files and prompts.
  • Who decides on content capture? Capturing content should be an explicit, opt-in choice, encrypted, with retention and access that you set.
  • Is every decision accountable? Each allow, guide or block should be explainable after the fact, to security, engineering and auditors alike.
Minimal capture is not a limitation. It is what makes governance something people can trust.

Trust makes adoption possible

Developers accept guardrails more readily when they know the system is not quietly collecting everything they type. Security teams can approve AI tools with more confidence when the evidence stays in an environment they already control. And leadership gets a governance model that will hold up under review.
